Chandelier Light Bulb: Choose the Right Size and Type

Check the base and voltage, measure clearance, use actual watts, choose lumens and finish, then confirm enclosure and dimmer compatibility.

The right chandelier light bulb must match the fixture as a complete system. Confirm the fixture voltage and screw base, measure the available space, follow the fixture’s wattage marking, choose the desired light output and appearance, check enclosed-fixture approval where necessary, and verify the exact bulb-and-dimmer combination.

The short answer: use this seven-point buying checklist

Before ordering, record these seven details:

  1. Fixture voltage: Match the bulb’s rated voltage to the fixture and supply.
  2. Base code: Identify E12, E26, E11, E14, or another base from the existing bulb or fixture marking.
  3. Physical dimensions: Check maximum width and overall length, not just the shape name.
  4. Actual lamp watts: Follow the fixture label’s exact wording. Compare each bulb with a per-socket limit, or add the actual watts of all bulbs if the marking gives a total fixture limit.
  5. Light and appearance: Choose lumens, color temperature, shape, and a clear, frosted, or milky finish.
  6. Enclosed-fixture rating: If the bulb sits inside a closed globe, choose a lamp explicitly approved for enclosed fixtures.
  7. Dimmer compatibility: Verify the exact bulb model against the exact dimmer model.

E12 is common, but it is not universal. Bulbrite’s displayed chandelier collection includes E12 lamps as well as E26 CA10 models, showing why the word “chandelier” cannot identify the base by itself. When replacing one lamp in a multi-light fixture, record the existing bulb’s manufacturer, model number, shape, finish, dimensions, and Kelvin value.

Stop at bulb selection if the voltage or fixture marking is unclear, the socket appears damaged, wiring is exposed, or the job would require changing a hardwired dimmer, socket, or fixture component. Use a qualified electrician for that work.

Identify the base before choosing the bulb shape

The screw base and glass shape are separate specifications. E12 and E26 describe screw bases, while B11, CA8, and CA10 describe bulb forms. “B11 E12” therefore identifies both the bulb body and its base.

A retailer-authored guide uses the following shopping conventions and explains that the number in an Edison screw code represents the approximate base diameter in millimeters. These names help identify products, but they do not prove which socket a particular fixture uses. See the chandelier base and shape guide.

Read the markings on the existing bulb and fixture first. If the code is missing, compare the old bulb’s screw-base diameter with published dimensions without modifying or probing the socket.

Do not assume every chandelier takes E12. A screw base that appears to fit also does not establish voltage compatibility.

Decode B11, CA8, CA10, candle, and flame shapes

Shape codes describe the decorative envelope, not the socket.

In the retailer guide’s convention, the number following the prefix represents the diameter in eighths of an inch. A B11 is therefore 11/8 inches, or approximately 1.375 inches, wide. Actual overall length and tip design can still vary by manufacturer. Review the retailer’s shape-code explanation.

A matching base does not guarantee that the glass will fit. Measure:

  • Maximum bulb diameter
  • Overall length, including the base
  • Clearance around the candle sleeve or socket cover
  • Clearance inside a shade or globe
  • Distance between neighboring bulbs
  • Space needed to install and remove the lamp

B10 and B11 bulbs may sometimes substitute when the base, width, length, and fixture clearances all agree, but the codes alone do not make them interchangeable.

Feit Electric suggests straight or flame-tip bulbs for downward-facing sockets and bent tips for upward-facing sockets. A separate decorative-lighting retailer suggests compact torpedo bulbs for chandeliers with shades. Treat both as fit-and-appearance guidance rather than electrical rules.

Choose light output, color temperature, and finish without confusing the labels

Three common package terms have different meanings:

  • Incandescent-equivalent watts provide an approximate brightness comparison. They are not the LED’s electrical load.
  • Lumens describe light output.

For a simple output comparison, multiply the lumens per bulb by the number of sockets.

Color temperature describes the tone of white light. Bulbrite’s displayed chandelier LED range includes 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K products. Compare the displayed Bulbrite options.

Finish also changes the appearance:

  • Clear filament bulbs leave the filament and light source visible.
  • Frosted or milky bulbs obscure the filament and create a different visual presentation.

Neither finish is automatically better. Consider whether the lamp is exposed at eye level, hidden behind a shade, or surrounded by decorative glass.

For a uniform multi-light chandelier, use the same product model, shape, dimensions, finish, lumen output, and color temperature in every socket. A shared description such as “warm white” does not establish an exact match.

Check fixture limits and enclosed-globe suitability

Find the chandelier’s maximum-wattage marking before buying bulbs. Feit Electric says this marking is usually printed on the socket or inside the canopy.

Use actual watts, not the incandescent-equivalent number. For example, if a package says “40W equivalent” and separately lists a lower actual wattage, the actual figure is the electrical consumption. Do not infer actual power from an ambiguous product title.

A matching base still does not establish the correct voltage, physical clearance, dimmer compatibility, or suitability for a closed globe. For an enclosed chandelier globe, Feit Electric instructs buyers to use a bulb rated for enclosed fixtures; low actual wattage alone does not establish that approval.

If the wattage marking is illegible or ambiguous, ask the fixture manufacturer or a qualified electrician rather than guessing.

Verify dimmer compatibility before buying multiple bulbs

A dimmable label means the bulb is designed for dimming. It does not prove compatibility with every dimmer.

Use this workflow:

  1. Record the complete bulb model number.
  2. Record the complete dimmer model number.
  3. Search the dimmer manufacturer’s tested compatibility database.
  4. Check the bulb manufacturer’s dimmer guide.
  5. If the exact pairing is absent, ask the manufacturer rather than assuming compatibility.

The Lutron LED Compatibility Tool allows users to search for an LED by Lutron dimmer or a Lutron dimmer by LED. A result applies to the listed models, not every bulb with the same base, shape, or watt-equivalent description.

For the Sunnata STCL-153M, Lutron recommends lamps it has tested and approved. When a bulb is absent from its list, Lutron directs users to the LED manufacturer for a dimmer recommendation. See the model-specific Sunnata compatibility guidance.

Troubleshoot flicker, blinking, poor dimming, and off-state glow

Bulb-and-dimmer incompatibility is one possible cause of poor LED behavior, but it is not the only possible cause.

Lutron explains that some Caséta smart dimmers use a small current while off so they can receive wireless signals. Some LEDs are sensitive enough to glow faintly as a result. Its neutral-wire and phase-selection suggestions apply to particular Caséta products and should not be generalized to every dimmer or wiring system.

Start by checking the exact compatibility listing, confirming that every lamp is dimmable, and installing the same bulb model throughout the chandelier. Then consult the bulb and dimmer documentation. Persistent buzzing, damaged sockets, uncertain wiring, or dimmer replacement should be referred to a qualified electrician.

Chandeliers often require several visually matching lamps, and some bulbs are available in multipacks. Compare package quantity with the socket count, but do not assume a multipack is cheaper or more consistent without checking the exact listing.

One narrow historical safety note: the CPSC recalled Infinity Green UDC3CW and UDC3WW candelabra LEDs in 2013 after two reports that the bulbs overheated and caught fire; no injuries were reported. The recall concerned those models only, not chandelier LEDs generally. Owners should stop using the named bulbs and follow the CPSC’s Infinity Green refund instructions.

Do not buy by the word “chandelier” alone. Record the voltage and socket, measure the available space, apply the fixture’s marked wattage limit correctly, choose the desired light and finish, confirm enclosed-fixture approval where needed, and verify the exact bulb-and-dimmer pairing.

Can I use any E12 bulb in an E12 chandelier socket?

Not automatically. E12 identifies the screw-base size, but you must still verify voltage, actual wattage, physical dimensions, clearance, enclosed-fixture suitability, and dimmer compatibility.

What is the difference between E12 and B11?

E12 describes a screw base approximately 12 millimeters in diameter under the retailer guide’s naming convention. B11 describes a bullet or torpedo bulb body approximately 11/8 inches, or 1.375 inches, wide. A bulb can therefore be both B11 and E12.

Does a 40W-equivalent LED count as 40 watts against the fixture limit?

No. “40W equivalent” is an approximate incandescent-brightness comparison. Use the LED’s separately listed actual wattage, applying it according to whether the fixture marking gives a per-socket or total limit.

Do chandelier bulbs need to be rated for enclosed fixtures?

They need that approval when the fixture places the bulb inside an enclosed globe or enclosure. A matching base and low actual wattage do not establish enclosed-fixture suitability.
