IP65 Isn't Waterproof: Choosing LED Strip That Survives Its Location

“Waterproof LED strip” is a phrase doing three different jobs, and the IP code on the reel is the only part that means anything.
The code, decoded
The second digit is the water one: IP65 = hose-proof jets; IP67 = survives temporary immersion; IP68 = continuous submersion to a rated depth. The first digit (6 = dust-tight) is why you’ll rarely see anything else on sealed strip.
What the code doesn’t say: how the strip is sealed, which decides how it ages. A silicone coating (IP65) is flexible and cheap but yellows and peels at cut points. A silicone sleeve (IP67) wears better outdoors. Fully potted strip (IP68) is the only one that belongs anywhere water stands — and the only one for ponds and fountains.
Matching rating to location
- Kitchen under-cabinet, closed bathrooms: IP20 bare strip is usually fine — steam isn’t spray, and bare strip runs cooler and dims smoother. Above a sink splash zone, step to IP65.
- Covered patio, eaves, soffits: IP65 minimum, IP67 where wind-driven rain reaches.
- Uncovered outdoors, coastal air: IP67 sleeve, and corrosion moves to the connectors — which brings the real rule below.
- Ponds, pools, fountains: IP68 potted strip rated deeper than your install, powered through a proper 12V/24V system. Nothing line-voltage goes near water, full stop.
The three details that decide lifespan
- Every cut and joint reopens the seal. Reseal cut ends with the manufacturer’s end caps and silicone, or the strip is IP-nothing at exactly its most corrosion-prone point — the copper pads.
- Connectors fail before strip. Outdoors, soldered joints in adhesive-lined heat shrink outlive clip connectors by years.
- Heat is the quiet killer. Sealed strip runs hotter; mounted in aluminum channel it sheds that heat and the diodes keep their brightness years longer. Channel plus a diffuser also fixes the dotted-line look — the upgrade everyone makes the second time.
